The further integration of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Shenzhen Special Economic Zone calls for the development of a new architectural typology to represent the spirit of "One Country Two Systems" at the Cross Boundary Points. Instead of two separate terminal buildings at Hong Kong side and Shenzhen side respectively and five bridges over Shenzhen River linking these two discrete building masses, we envisioned that the new building shall be a homogenous form over Shenzhen River to speak for a unified identity shared by people of Hong Kong and people Shenzhen. The new terminus shall be conceived as an infrastructure which can sustain and amplify the dynamic flow of people, cars and goods between the two cities in an efficient and seamless manner. A multitude of curves are applied to the facade of the building to create the fluid form which is in fact composed of two intertwining arms stretching from Hong Kong side and Shenzhen side respectively. It will be a powerful gesture in celebration of the tensile force found in the structure as well as the vibrant movements generated by different kinds of traffic happening at both ends of the terminus. Together with the resultant form is a roof area of more than 20,000 m2. Solar panels and rain water collection system are installed to take advantage of the large roof surface to convert solar energy into electricity for use by the terminus and conserve grey water for irrigation purpose. Triangular perforations following the structural frame are allowed on the skin to maximize the penetration of natural light from the roof and from the side to minimize the needs for artificial lighting. This new terminus shall ultimately transform our experience of crossing boundary points.
