Green Loop
The proposal for the new TKO Bridge investigates the potential for infrastructure to transform the urban environment through its integration with landscape, visually and typologically enriching the generic model of the suspension bridge in Hong Kong. The proposed bridge is perceived as part of a larger urban strategy that unifies the various residential clusters at Junk Bay with a loop organization, rather than a conventional linear element that is inserted into the site. This loop is adaptable to existing site context yet can grow organically with the district of TKO to incorporate cultural and sports programs which are environmental friendly. The undulating form of the bridge main structure seeks to integrate seamlessly with the ridgeline of the surrounding hills at the backdrop of TKO. In order to bring in the magnificent view of Lei Yue Mun to residents at Junk Bay, the structural cables running from the mast to the deck are organized in such a way that the space at the centre of the bridge is free of cables, reminiscent of the technique of framing views frequently adopted in the design of traditional Chinese gardens. The main deck of the bridge is split at the centre of the Junk Bay to introduce a landscape strip along the pedestrian bridge deck, creating a unique place for contemplation and relaxation at the vantage position to capture the view of Lei Yue Mun and South China Sea. It also helps to screen off the noise and fumes of the high speed traffic from the pedestrian and cyclist pathways. A gradient landscape pattern is deployed at various anchor positions along the loop to integrate the hard paving, soft landscape and street furniture, setting up a range of qualitatively distinct spaces in a smooth transition along the bridge.
